A lot of people land in Austin planning to get around by Uber and Lyft, and for some trips that is the right call. For others, the rides add up faster than expected, especially once you leave downtown. The honest answer depends on where you are staying, how many people are with you, and whether you will ever leave the city limits.
Below is a plain comparison for 3, 5 and 7 day trips using typical rideshare ranges and our daily rental prices. Your exact numbers will differ, but the pattern holds.
What rideshare usually costs in Austin
Rideshare prices in Austin swing a lot by time of day. Recent fare comparisons put the typical ranges at about:
- Short hops downtown (Rainey Street to the Capitol, say): about $8 to $13.
- Cross-town rides (downtown to the Domain, East Austin to Zilker): about $13 to $20 at quiet times.
- Airport to downtown: about $18 to $30, before surge and airport fees.
The catch is surge. Friday and Saturday nights, the end of a Longhorns game, ACL weekend or the Grand Prix can push the same ride to two or three times the normal price. Fare trackers say the gap between quiet-hour and peak-hour pricing in Austin is among the widest of any US market. A Wednesday afternoon is cheap. Midnight on a Saturday is not.
What a rental costs with us
Our daily prices in Austin start at $98 for a compact sedan like the Toyota Corolla or similar or the Honda Civic or similar. A Mazda CX-5 or similar is $114 a day. Rentals of three days or more cost less per day than the daily rate, and a full week less still, so the figures below are the ceiling, not the floor.
A few costs people forget on both sides:
- Rental: gas, parking at your hotel (many downtown hotels charge for overnight parking, so ask yours), and tolls if you use toll roads.
- Rideshare: airport pickup fees, tips, surge, and the wait at busy times.
We deliver free to your hotel, home or the AUS arrivals curb, so the two airport rides drop out of the rental side of the math entirely. There is no airport concession fee and no young-driver surcharge for drivers 21 and up.
The 3-day trip
Say two people stay downtown for a long weekend. A typical plan: airport in and out, dinner on South Congress, a morning at Zilker and Barton Springs, a night on Rainey Street, and a barbecue run to the east side.
- Rideshare: two airport rides at about $18 to $30 each, plus eight to ten in-town rides at about $10 to $20. That lands somewhere around $120 to $260, more if your nights out hit surge.
- Rental: a Corolla or similar for three days is at most $267 at the daily rate, before gas and hotel parking.
Verdict: close. If you are staying downtown, walking a lot and not leaving the city, rideshare usually wins or ties. If you are staying in a rental house in Mueller or Travis Heights, or you add one trip out of town, the car pulls ahead.
The 5-day trip
Five days usually means at least one trip outside the city: Lake Travis, Hamilton Pool, a Hill Country winery, or Round Rock to see family.
- Rideshare in town: two airport rides plus 15 to 18 local rides lands around $190 to $420.
- The day trip: this is where rideshare breaks. A ride from downtown to Lake Travis can cost about as much as a day of rental each way, and getting a ride back from a winery in Spicewood or a park on Lake Travis is often slow or impossible. Fredericksburg is about 80 miles out. Nobody should plan to rideshare there and back.
- Rental: five days in a Corolla or similar is at most $445 at the daily rate, and less with the multi-day price.
Verdict: the rental wins for most people, and wins easily for two or more travelers sharing one car. Our Hill Country day trips guide has routes that only work with a car.
The 7-day trip
A week in Austin almost always includes a mix: workdays or sightseeing in town, a lake day, maybe San Antonio, which is about 80 miles south.
- Rideshare: two airport rides plus 20 to 25 local rides comes to roughly $240 to $560, and that is before any day trip or a single surge night.
- Rental: a week is priced below the daily rate per day. We do not publish weekly totals, so call or text for the number, or read our guide to weekly and monthly rental rates in Austin for how longer rentals are priced.
Verdict: for a full week, a car is usually the cheaper and much less stressful option, unless you are staying downtown and genuinely never leaving it.
When rideshare is the better choice
- You are staying downtown or on Rainey Street and every plan is within a couple of miles.
- Most of your evenings involve drinking. Do not drive. Take a ride home and pick the car up the next morning.
- Your hotel charges a lot for parking and you will barely use the car.
When the rental wins
- You are staying in the suburbs: Round Rock, Cedar Park, Pflugerville, Kyle or Buda. Rideshare from there to downtown and back adds up quickly. See our Round Rock and Cedar Park delivery guide.
- There are three or more of you. One car splits four ways. Rides do not get cheaper per person in the same way once you need an XL.
- You want Lake Travis, the Hill Country or San Antonio.
- You have early or late flights, when surge and waits at AUS are at their worst.
Four friends, one car
The comparison shifts fast with group size. Four adults usually need an UberXL or two standard cars at busy times, which can roughly double the per-ride cost of the numbers above. A rental does not care how many seats are filled. A Hyundai Santa Fe or similar at $131 a day seats five with room for four bags, which is about $30 a day per person for a group of four before gas. Bigger groups of up to twelve can share the 12-seat Ford Transit or similar at $296 a day.
A mixed plan works too
Plenty of visitors do both: rent a car for the days that include a lake trip, family in the suburbs or meetings across town, and use rideshare on the nights out. Because we deliver and collect for free anywhere in Greater Austin, the car does not have to start and end at the airport.
