Two towns, one I-35 corridor
Buda calls itself the Wiener Dog Capital of Texas. Every spring, the Buda Lions Club's Country Fair and Wiener Dog Races fill Buda City Park with dachshund heats, fair food and crafts. The big Cabela's on I-35 is a landmark you'll use for directions. Neighborhoods like Garlic Creek, Sunfield and Whispering Hollow are spread out on both sides of the highway.
Kyle is officially the Pie Capital of Texas, a title the Legislature made official. The pie story started with the Texas Pie Company downtown. From April through November, Kyle Market Days fills Mary Kyle Hartson Park on the second Saturday of the month. Plum Creek, the long-established master-planned neighborhood, and Hometown Kyle are two of the larger subdivisions.
Neither town has much public transit, and the subdivisions are a drive from everything. Visitors without a car end up stuck at the house.
The commute: I-35, SH 45 and FM 1626
I-35 is the obvious route to Austin, and it's the problem. Without traffic, downtown is about 25 minutes from Buda and 30 from Kyle. At rush hour, the stretch through south Austin can double that. SH 45, a toll road, runs west from I-35 near Buda along FM 1626 and connects to MoPac, which is usually the better way to reach west Austin and the Domain. Hospitals, schools and jobs in Hays County
Seton Medical Center Hays on Kyle Parkway is the main hospital for the area, and Buda now has its own full-service Baylor Scott & White hospital plus an Ascension Seton outpatient center. When a parent comes to help after a new baby or a surgery, a car delivered to the house means they can handle pharmacy runs and school pick-ups on their own.
Hays CISD covers both towns, and fall Friday nights mean high school football traffic around the stadiums. On the business side, Kyle's industrial parks along I-35 bring in contractors and project teams. Day trips south and west
Kyle and Buda are a good jumping-off point for the Hill Country. Wimberley and Dripping Springs, with their wineries, swimming holes and wedding venues, are each roughly 25 to 30 minutes west on the ranch roads. San Marcos and its river are 15 minutes south on I-35, and New Braunfels is about half an hour.
