Austin is one of the most popular bachelorette and bachelor party cities in the country, and anyone who has organized one knows the hard part is not the itinerary. It is moving ten people from a rental house to a lake to a winery to Rainey Street without losing half the group to separate rideshares and surge pricing.
This guide covers how groups actually get around on an Austin party weekend, how a self-driven 12-seat van fits in, the designated-driver plan that keeps everyone safe, and where to put a van once you get downtown.
The usual Austin party weekend, and how far apart it is
Most group weekends follow a similar shape. The distances are what make transport a real decision:
- Rainey Street: bungalow bars at the south edge of downtown, near Lady Bird Lake. Easy walk from downtown hotels, a short ride from East Austin rentals.
- Sixth Street: East Sixth, between Brazos and Red River, is the classic bar strip, and West Sixth is a little calmer. Both are a few minutes from Rainey.
- Lake Travis: party boats, Devil's Cove, and lakeside restaurants. Marinas like Lakeway Marina and Emerald Point are roughly 35 to 45 minutes from downtown via RM 2222 or RM 620.
- Wineries: the Spicewood area, west of Lake Travis on SH 71, has Spicewood Vineyards, 5 Soul Wine Co. with Frontyard Brewing next door, and others, about 45 minutes from downtown. Fredericksburg and the Wine Road 290 wineries are about an hour and a half away.
Downtown, rideshare and walking work well. The lake and the wineries are where groups get stuck: two or three XL rides each way, long waits for a return pickup, and a bill that climbs fast.
Why a 12-seat van works for groups
Our Ford Transit or similar seats 12, with room for 10 bags, and costs $296 a day. Split across ten people, that is under $27 a person for the day, before gas, and the whole group arrives together.
It also solves the airport. Most groups fly in on different flights. With the van, one sober driver can make a couple of runs to the AUS arrivals curb, or we can deliver it straight to your rental house anywhere in Greater Austin. For how the airport handoff works, see AUS pickup without the counter.
Groups of six or fewer may be better off in a Hyundai Santa Fe or similar at $131 a day or a Jeep Grand Cherokee or similar at $147 a day, both with seats for five. Bigger groups sometimes rent the van plus one SUV.
The designated-driver plan
This is the part to settle before anyone books a boat.
- Pick the driver before the trip. The driver must be 21 or older with a valid license, and should be someone who is genuinely happy to stay sober that day. Some groups rotate: one driver for the lake day, another for the winery day.
- The van does not go out at night. Use it for daytime legs: airport, lake, wineries, a barbecue run. For Rainey and Sixth Street after dark, park the van at the house and take rideshares or walk.
- No open drinks in the van. Texas open container law covers the whole passenger area, not only the driver. The exception for limos and party buses applies to vehicles used to carry people for pay, not to a van your group drives itself. Keep anything opened behind the last row of seats or in a closed cooler in the back.
- Hydrate and plan the ride home. A lake day in Texas heat followed by a winery stop is a long day even for the sober driver.
Parking a van downtown
A passenger van is tall. Most downtown parking garages post height clearances that are too low for it, so do not drive in without checking the sign at the entrance.
- Use surface lots. There are surface lots around Rainey Street and the east side of downtown. Rates go up on Friday and Saturday nights and during events, so check the posted rate before you leave the van.
- Drop off and send the driver to park. Let the group out a block from where you are going and let the driver find a lot without ten passengers giving directions.
- Expect slow traffic around Sixth Street. The city has changed how it manages East Sixth on weekend nights in recent years, with barricades and lane changes. Plan your drop-off a block or two away.
- Better yet, leave it at the house. For nights downtown, the van is more useful parked than circling.
The lake day
For Lake Travis, the van earns its money. You carry the coolers, towels, speakers and ten people in one trip, and you are not stuck waiting for a return ride from a marina at sunset. Boat rentals and party boats leave from marinas around the lake. Lakeway Marina and Emerald Point are reached from RM 620, and the north-shore marinas near Volente are reached by RM 620 to FM 2769.
Bring cash for park entry if you plan a lake park instead of a boat. Several Travis County parks on the lake take cash only at the gate. Our Texas lakes and Hill Country guide has more lake ideas.
The winery day
Spicewood is the closest wine cluster to the city: take SH 71 west past Bee Cave, about 45 minutes from downtown. If you want a bigger day, Fredericksburg has dozens of tasting rooms along US 290. Book tastings ahead for groups of ten or more, since many wineries ask large groups to reserve. Our Hill Country day trips guide covers routes and timing.
A sample weekend
- Friday: van picks up the early arrivals at AUS, grocery run, dinner on the east side, rideshare to Rainey Street.
- Saturday: lake day with a sober driver, back to the house, rideshare to Sixth Street.
- Sunday: brunch, a winery stop on the way back from Spicewood, then airport runs.
The supply run nobody plans for
The first afternoon of every group trip includes a big grocery and drinks run: water, ice, snacks, mixers and breakfast for ten. Doing that in three rideshares is miserable. With the van, the sober driver and two helpers can hit an H-E-B on the way from the airport and fill the back in one stop. Ten bags of luggage and a full grocery load is a lot, so do the airport run first, drop the bags at the house, then go shopping.
