How the insurance rental allowance usually works
Every policy and claim is different, so read yours or ask your adjuster. In general terms, a replacement car after an accident is paid for in one of two ways:

The other driver was at fault. Their liability insurer usually owes you a reasonable substitute car while yours is being repaired or until a total-loss settlement. In Texas you can file directly with the at-fault driver's insurer. Adjusters typically approve a daily amount and a number of days tied to the repair estimate.

You were at fault, or the cause was hail, a flood or a theft. Then it depends on your own policy. Rental reimbursement is an optional add-on to many auto policies, and it usually pays up to a daily cap and a maximum total per claim. Both numbers are on your declarations page.
If the daily allowance is lower than the rental price, the difference is normally yours to cover. If the repair takes longer than the insurer approved, ask the shop to send the adjuster an updated estimate so the days can be extended.
