Leander is the end of the line, literally. Capital MetroRail's Red Line starts here, and the 183A toll road runs from here south through Cedar Park toward Austin. It's one of the fastest-growing cities in Texas, and most of that growth is new houses in places like Travisso, Crystal Falls, Mason Hills and Bryson. That brings a lot of people who are new to town, between cars, or hosting relatives who flew in.
We deliver a car to your Leander address, or to the park-and-ride at Leander station, and collect it when you're done. Compact sedans start at $98 a day. No counter, no shuttle.

Leander station: the train covers downtown, a car covers the rest
Leander station, on US 183 just north of RM 2243, is the northern end of the Red Line and has a park-and-ride lot with around 600 spaces. From here the train takes about 45 minutes to the downtown station by the convention center, with stops along the way including the Domain area and the soccer stadium. If your trip is mostly downtown, the train works.
The Red Line doesn't go to the airport, Lake Travis, the Hill Country or most of the suburbs, and it runs on a fixed schedule. A common setup for visitors is to use the train for a downtown day and a Corolla or similar ($98 a day) for everything else. If you're flying in, see our AUS airport rental page, because there's no train link from Leander to AUS.
Driving from Leander: 183A, US 183 and RM 2243
183A is the main commuter road. It's a toll road that runs south through Cedar Park and joins US 183 in north Austin, and it has been extended north as Leander grows. US 183 runs alongside it as the free route, with traffic lights and more stop-and-go. Ask us how tolls work on your rental before you plan a daily 183A commute.
Without traffic, downtown Austin is about 35 to 40 minutes away, and north Austin's tech offices and the Domain are about 25. RM 2243 and San Gabriel Parkway are the main east-west roads, and both get congested around school drop-off and pick-up times. With Leander ISD campuses all over town, school-hour traffic is real.
ACC San Gabriel, Northline and a city still being built
Austin Community College's San Gabriel campus sits on 100 acres right next to Leander station and serves students from Leander, Liberty Hill and Georgetown. At US 183 and San Gabriel Parkway, Northline is being built as Leander's new downtown, a mixed-use district with apartments, shops and offices. Crystal Falls Town Center and the shopping along 183 cover most daily errands.
A city this new has a lot of people in transition. Some are relocating while their own car is shipped across the country, some are staying in short-term rentals while a new house closes, and some have a car in the shop after a hailstorm. For stays of a month or more, see monthly car rental in Austin. If your car is in a body shop, see replacement car rental.
Hosting relatives in a brand-new house is the other big one. Leander's newest subdivisions can be a long drive from the nearest grocery store or pharmacy, so guests without a car end up waiting on you for every errand. A car delivered to your driveway for their stay fixes that, and three days or more costs less per day. Liberty Hill, just north on US 183, has grown right along with Leander, and a lot of visiting families split their time between the two.
Lake Travis and the Hill Country from Leander
The north shore of Lake Travis, around Lago Vista and Jonestown, is about 20 to 25 minutes from Leander, and Liberty Hill and the ranch roads of the Hill Country begin just north and west. A Jeep Wrangler Sport or similar at $164 a day is the lake-weekend favorite. Our Wrangler guide to Texas lakes and the Hill Country has routes. For a quieter drive out to Fredericksburg, see Hill Country day trips in an economy car.
