A compact sedan is the least expensive car we rent in Austin, and for a lot of trips it is also the right one. The Toyota Corolla or similar and the Honda Civic or similar seat five, take two checked bags in the trunk, fit the tight spaces in downtown garages, and use less fuel on the long, slow stretches of I-35 that every Austin visitor ends up on. We deliver either one to your hotel, home, office or the AUS arrivals curb, and we collect it when you are done.
This page is about the compact class only. For the full fleet, delivery areas and how a booking works, start with economy car rental Austin.

Who books a compact in Austin
Most of our compact rentals go to people who need a car for getting from A to B, not for hauling. In practice that looks like this:
-
Solo business travelers with meetings at the Domain, a site visit in Round Rock or a conference at the convention center, traveling with a carry-on and a laptop bag.
-
Couples in town for a long weekend of South Congress, East Sixth and a day out to Dripping Springs.
-
Students and visiting parents around the UT campus, where a small car is simply easier to live with. See car rental for UT Austin students and parents.
-
Residents whose own car is in the body shop for a week or two, covered on our replacement car rental page.
What these trips have in common is one or two people, light luggage and a lot of city driving. That is exactly where a compact earns its place.
Parking and fuel: why size matters here
Downtown Austin parking is mostly garages, and many of them are older structures with narrow ramps, tight turns and spaces marked for compact cars. A Corolla or Civic slides into those without drama. The same goes for street parking on the busy blocks around South Congress, Rainey Street and Clarksville, where the open space at the curb is often a short one.
Fuel is the other half. A typical visit includes a run up I-35 to Round Rock or Georgetown, a trip down to San Marcos, or a loop on SH 130 to get around I-35 traffic on the east side. SH 130 and parts of MoPac and 183 are toll roads, so read the Austin toll roads guide before you pick a route. Either way, stop-and-go traffic is where a small sedan saves you the most at the pump, and Austin has plenty of it at rush hour.
Corolla or Civic: the same category
People ask which one to choose. The honest answer is that it does not matter much, and you do not have to decide. Both are recent, automatic compact sedans with Apple CarPlay or Android Auto, five seats and room for two checked bags. They sit at the same daily rate, $98 today.
Like every car we rent, they are listed as "or similar". You reserve the compact sedan category and you get the model you booked or another car of the same class, seats, year range and price. If you have a strong preference for one of them, tell us when we confirm by phone and we will do what we can.
When to move up to a midsize
A compact stops being the right car when the trunk or the back seat runs out. The usual signs:
- Three checked bags instead of two.
- Four adults on a drive of more than an hour, to Houston, Dallas or San Antonio.
- A week-long stay where you will be living out of the car between hotels.
In those cases the Honda Accord or similar at $114 a day gives you a bigger trunk and more rear legroom for a small difference in price. The midsize car rental Austin page compares the two in detail.
Compact SUVs as the alternative
Some people who start out looking for a compact sedan really want a car that is small on the outside and practical on the inside. That is what a compact SUV is. The Mazda CX-5 or similar and the Honda CR-V or similar are not much longer than a Civic, so they still park easily, but you sit higher, load through a big rear hatch and get more room for a stroller, a cooler or a couple of duffel bags.
They make sense for a Hill Country day on ranch roads, a family of three with a car seat you bring yourself, or anyone who just prefers the higher driving position on MoPac. The full range is on the SUV rental Austin page.
Keeping the cost down
The daily rate is only part of the cost. We deliver for free and there is no airport concession fee or facility charge, so there are no hidden fees: we confirm your exact rate before you pay; the refundable deposit and coverage options are explained before you pay. Three days or more cost less per day, and a week less again. For a stay of a month or longer, the monthly car rental page explains how we quote it.
If you are weighing a compact against getting around by rideshare, the Uber vs rental car in Austin guide runs the numbers for a typical stay. For most visits longer than a couple of days with more than a few trips, a compact comes out ahead.
How it works
- Pick the vehicle category and your dates in the form at the top of this page, or call or text 512-851-0490.
- Tell us where to bring it: your hotel, home, office, venue or the AUS arrivals curb.
- We confirm by phone within the hour and deliver the car clean and fueled at the time you chose. About ten minutes for license, card, walk-around and keys.
- When you are done, we collect it from the same place.
What you need
A valid driver's license and a major credit or debit card. Minimum age is 21, with no young-driver surcharge. Basic liability coverage is included; the refundable deposit and the coverage options are explained before you pay anything. There is no airport concession fee and no facility charge. Every car is recent, automatic, with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and "or similar" means you reserve the category and get that model or one of the same class, seats and price.
Common questions
Will I get a Corolla or a Civic?
You reserve the compact sedan category. You get the model you booked or another car of the same class, seats, year range and price. Both seat five, take two checked bags and come with an automatic transmission and Apple CarPlay or Android Auto.
How much luggage fits in a compact?
Two large checked bags in the trunk plus a couple of backpacks or carry-ons on the back seat. If you are three or four adults with a bag each, the midsize car is the safer choice.
Is a compact OK for a drive to San Antonio or Houston?
For two people, yes. San Antonio is about an hour and a half down I-35 and Houston about two and a half to three hours by SH 71 or US 290. With four adults and luggage, step up to the Honda Accord or similar.
Can you deliver a compact car to downtown or UT?
Yes. Delivery is free anywhere in Greater Austin: downtown hotels, apartments in West Campus, offices at the Domain or the AUS arrivals curb. Booking is confirmed by phone within the hour.
Do you charge extra for drivers under 25?
No. The minimum age is 21 and there is no young-driver surcharge. You need a valid driver's license and a major credit or debit card. See renting under 25.
Is it cheaper if I keep it longer?
Yes. Three days or more cost less per day and a week less still. For a month or more, call or text 512-851-0490 and we quote it directly, or see monthly car rental.
