Visiting family in Sun City
Sun City Texas is Del Webb's 55-and-over community on the northwest side of Georgetown and the largest active-adult community in the state. Since it opened in 1996 it has grown to well over 15,000 residents. It's big and spread out, with several golf courses, pools and activity centers, and very little you can walk to.
When children and grandchildren fly in for Thanksgiving or a birthday, they usually need their own car so the residents aren't the full-time chauffeurs. A Hyundai Santa Fe or similar at $131 a day fits five people and four bags. For a big family reunion, the Ford Transit or similar seats 12 at $296 a day. Southwestern University: move-in, family weekend and commencement
Southwestern University, founded in 1840, is the oldest university in Texas, and its campus sits on East University Avenue (SH 29), east of downtown Georgetown. Southwestern is small, so hotel rooms and rental cars nearby go fast on move-in weekend and at commencement in May.
Parents flying in from out of state usually land at AUS, pick up the car at the curb and drive north on SH 130. A Mazda CX-5 or similar at $114 a day takes a dorm's worth of bins and a mini-fridge box with the back seats folded. Book early for May.
The square, the Red Poppy Festival and downtown weekends
Georgetown bills its 1911 courthouse square as the most beautiful town square in Texas, and on weekends the restaurants, wine bars and shops around it are busy. The biggest weekend of the year is the Red Poppy Festival in late April, with a parade around the square, a car show and concerts. During the festival, parking near the square disappears early, so a car delivered to your hotel lets you park once on the edge of downtown and walk in.
The square also works as a base for a slower trip. Couples who fly in for a long weekend often stay near downtown, spend a day on the square, a day at Lake Georgetown and a day driving the Hill Country west on SH 29. For that kind of trip, a Honda Accord or similar at $114 a day is more comfortable on the highway than a compact, with room for three bags. If it's just you, a Civic or similar at $98 does the job.
Getting around: I-35, SH 130 and SH 29
SH 130 starts at I-35 just north of Georgetown and runs south along the east side of Round Rock and Pflugerville toward the airport. It's a toll road and usually the fastest way to AUS, so ask us how tolls work on your rental. I-35 south to Austin is free but runs through Round Rock and north Austin, where rush hour can add 20 to 30 minutes. Downtown Austin is about 35 minutes on a clear road.
SH 29 (University Avenue) heads west toward Liberty Hill and the Hill Country. Williams Drive heads northwest toward Sun City and Lake Georgetown. Georgetown's biggest employers include St. David's Georgetown Hospital, Airborn and Southwestern itself. Many residents also commute to Dell in Round Rock, about 15 minutes south.
Lake Georgetown, Blue Hole and Inner Space Cavern
Georgetown's outdoor spots are close together. Lake Georgetown, on the North San Gabriel River west of town, has boat ramps, fishing and hiking trails. Blue Hole Park, a lagoon on the San Gabriel just off the square, is the classic summer swimming spot. Inner Space Cavern, a limestone cave you can tour, is right off I-35 on the south side of town.
