The Santa Fe is what we suggest when a family of four or five flies into Austin with a checked bag each. A family week in Austin by Santa Fe

Most family trips here mix short city hops with one or two longer drives. In town: Zilker Park and Barton Springs Pool, the Thinkery children's museum at Mueller, the Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum near the Capitol, and a late afternoon at Lady Bird Lake to watch the bats leave the Congress Avenue Bridge between spring and fall. Each is a 10 to 20 minute drive from most central hotels.

Day trips are where the bigger SUV pays off. Natural Bridge Caverns, between New Braunfels and San Antonio, is about an hour south on I-35. The water parks in New Braunfels are about 50 minutes away, and the San Antonio River Walk about an hour and twenty minutes. Kids, snacks, towels and a cooler all fit, with room to spare for what you bring back.

Two practical notes for families. Austin-Bergstrom is about 15 minutes from downtown without traffic, and the curb handover takes about ten minutes, so tired kids are at the hotel quickly. And from June to September the afternoons are hot: plan parks and pools for the morning, and bring a windshield sunshade for long parking stops.
