Nobody rents a Wrangler because it is practical. You rent it because a Hill Country weekend feels different from a high, upright seat in a Jeep, with the lake below you on RM 620 and nothing but limestone and live oaks along the ranch roads. It suits birthdays, anniversaries and friends' weekends where the drive is part of the plan.

Where to take a Wrangler from Austin

Start with Lake Travis, about 35 to 45 minutes from downtown. Pace Bend Park has unpaved spur roads down to its coves, and a 4x4 feels at home on them. Farther out, FM 1431 runs from Cedar Park toward Marble Falls with lake views most of the way.

For a full day, drive the Devil's Backbone, the ridge road on FM 32 between Wimberley and Blanco, about an hour from Austin. In spring, the Willow City Loop near Fredericksburg is one of the best wildflower drives in Texas; go on a weekday if you can, because it is a narrow road through private ranch land and gets crowded in bluebonnet season, which usually peaks from late March to mid-April. Summer is the opposite problem: Austin afternoons are hot from June to September, so start the Hill Country drives early and save the lake for the afternoon. Know the trade-offs
