A two-week assignment at the Domain, a contract at Apple's campus on West Parmer Lane, a stretch out at Tesla's Giga Texas off SH-130: the days look alike, a drive on MoPac or I-35 in the morning and the same drive back at night. Driving a Corolla on Austin roads

I-35 through central Austin is slow at rush hour on most weekdays, and the ongoing rebuild of the highway through downtown does not help. MoPac (Loop 1) is the usual alternative on the west side; its express lanes are tolled and the price rises with traffic. SH-130 and SH-45 are toll roads too, so ask us how tolls work on your rental before you set out. A small sedan does not make any of that faster, but it makes the hour less of a chore and burns little fuel while you sit.

Parking is the other reason. Garages at the Domain, around the Capitol and along Congress Avenue have tight ramps and compact spaces, and street parking in Hyde Park, Clarksville or Travis Heights favors a shorter car. Read the signs: many blocks near downtown are metered or permit-only.
